Cover Crop: TeaLAB Root 'n Shoot Blend
TeaLAB has put together a simple mix of 4 essential cover crop species. This blend provides two major functions: Improves Soil Structure, and Increase Organic Nitrogen Content.
Soil Structure is improved with Oats and Winter Rye seed, whose roots grow deep into the soil. The roots not only access and bring to the surface nutrients from low in the soil profile, but also create channels for water and air infiltration as the roots decompose post termination. Oats and Rye grow well in cool weather. They can grow tall though, so be sure to chop and drop, or till and chill, well before planting your cover crop.
Organic Nitrogen is added to the soil by the legumes White Clover and Vetch. These plants grow roots that harbor bacteria that are able to pull nitrogen from the air and turn it into fertilizer. This nitrogen is released into the soil while the plants are living, and also as the roots decompose after the plants are terminated. The nitrogen and decomposing organic matter work together to promote a vibrant soil microbiota.
Beyond helping with soil structure and increasing organic nitrogen, this blend will also work to prevent weeds, control erosion, and be a great forage for livestock.
After preparing the soil, spread cover crop seeds over the surface you desire to cover and cover seeds with a light raking. A light layer of straw can be laid over the top in order to protect the seedlings.
Fall: This blend should be planted 8-10 weeks prior to the first frost date. Frost cloth can be used to protect seedling if you get a late start.
Spring: Plant after the last frost, or when soil temperatures are above 38F.
