Cover Crop Seed: Mandala Blend
This cover crop seed blend contains five nitrogen fixing legumes and one deep rooted grass. This blend is intended to improve soil organic matter, increase soil nitrogen levels, and increase air and water infiltration.
The Mandala Blend was created at the Humboldt Permaculture Guild's Seed & Plant Exchange in March of 2023. The mandala was created with the Seed of Life pattern, drawn by creating intersecting circles that are meant to visually represent all of creation. There are 7 circles in the seed of life, much like there are seven notes on a musical scale (A->G), seven colors in the the rainbow (ROYGBIV), how according to Genesis it took seven days to create the world and its inhabitants, the Koran speaks of seven levels of heaven, there are seven higher worlds in Hinduism, there are seven chakras in us, a lucky number it must be.
This Cover Crop Contains
- Crimson Clover
- Ladino Clover
- Bell Beans
- Oats
- BioChar (a biology supporting soil amendment)
- Vetch
The traditional mandala is made with colored sand, each grain of which is believed to be charged with sacred energy, and that collectively the mandala becomes a very powerful spiritual entity. These seeds will be charged with a very special Arcata California kind of energy.
Plant anytime of year with sufficient water, before first and after last frost dates. Allow to grow to ankle/knee high, and then turn under the soil. Give yourself 2-4months for growth, and 1 month for decomposition. Cover crops are a good way to keep soil stable over the winter or fallow season, prepared new areas for planting, or create foraging space for livestock.
